Use and abuse of depressants

Now all over the world they use a huge amount of depressants. Today, benzodiazepines have become popular drugs for the treatment of insomnia and emotional disorders. Undoubtedly, these substances bring significant relief from such illnesses. It is also obvious that the use of benzodiazepines is associated with a much lower risk of physical dependence than with their predecessors, barbiturates and other sedatives, and, in addition, they are much less toxic. But now there is debate about the rationality of treating emotional disorders with benzodiazepines alone, especially long-term treatment. Often, benzodiazepines are not prescribed by psychiatrists who specialize in the treatment of physiological disorders, but by generalists who do not have special knowledge in this field. For example, tranquilizers are used to treat the symptoms of emotional disorders, but they very often do not solve problems. Sleeping pills helps to fall asleep, but the pills do not improve the relationship with his wife, do not correct the situation at work and can not cope with these sources of frustration. In fact, they carry danger, making these symptoms less noticeable, which allows a person to live in an environment far from normal. This state of affairs often quite suits a person, but for those who use benzodiazepines, it is very important to understand that these drugs do not cure anxiety and do not affect its causes, but only mask its symptoms. When these symptoms are controlled in a proper manner by the doctor and patient, these drugs can be really helpful.

The term “inhalants” is applicable to refer to several different chemical compounds, which are similar, rather, in the method of administration, than in their pharmacology. Some types of inhalants, such as anesthetics (choke, nitrous oxide) are true depressants, which is why they will be discussed in this chapter. It should be noted that the number of inhalants includes a variety of industrial products, in particular, glue, paint, butane gas, paint for editing typewritten text and much more (Table 7-3 contains a detailed list). Perhaps the only thing that unites these substances is their ability to stupefy and cause euphoria after inhalation.

There are a lot of threatening substances that can be inhaled, and therefore it is difficult to describe all the dangers associated with them. There is evidence of deaths due to failure of the cardiovascular system or poisoning by inhalation of butane, toluene and gasoline. With the constant use of inhalants associated with various diseases, including brain damage.

A group of inhalants that deserves special consideration is nitrous acid salts: amyl, butyl and isopropyl nitrites. When inhaled, amyl nitrite expands the coronary arteries, and at one time it was prescribed with angina in the form of ampoules, which were broken or incised before inhalation. Nitrites also dilate cerebral blood vessels, and cause short-lived euphoria and dizziness. These products are widely sold as room deodorants. Nitrous acid salts are widely used to recuperate, mainly among homosexuals. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals claim that the salts of nitric acid inhaled during sexual acts increase the duration and intensity of the orgasm. These drugs have a large number of side effects, in particular, headaches, tachycardia, pain in the eyes, and in some cases sudden death.
